La première rencontre a lieu en janvier 1925 à Florence, à la Villa Il Palmerino (<em>Evocation</em>, p. 126), où Vernon Lee les a invités à venir admirer son portrait et celui de Mary Duclaux (née Robinson) par John Singer Sargent.
