                <text>&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Théophane le Confesseur, moine et théologien, est surtout connu comme chroniqueur. Il naquit à Constantinople en 759 dans une famille de la haute aristocratie byzantine et fut élevé à la cour de Constantin V Copronyme. Fondateur du monastère de Sigriane en Asie mineure, il se distingua lors de la crise iconoclaste – ce qui lui valut le surnom de «confesseur» – et fut emprisonné deux ans comme iconolâtre, avant d'être exilé dans l'île de Samothrace où il mourut dans les années 817/818.&lt;/div&gt;&#13;
&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;Il est l'auteur d'une &lt;em&gt;Chronographie&lt;/em&gt; prolongeant celle de son ami Georges le Syncelle qui s'étendait de la création du monde aux années de l'empereur Dioclétien. Aussi Théophane commence-t-il son œuvre à sa suite, de 284 jusqu'en l'année 813. Cette œuvre conserve des récits par ailleurs inconnus sur l'histoire byzantine du VI&lt;sup&gt;e&lt;/sup&gt; au VIII&lt;sup&gt;e&lt;/sup&gt; siècle et se divise en deux parties distinctes, l'une présentant les principaux événements, l'autre proposant des tables chronologiques sur les années du monde, de l'ère chrétienne, des différents règnes, etc.&lt;/div&gt;</text>
