Dear Sir,
Your esteemed letter of the 1st, ult., was duly received and its contents noted with much interest and pleasure. It was really a long time since I saw your last dear letter, and I am very pleased to hear Madame and Misses Benedite as well as your goodself are all well and happy.
I have noted with much interest the contents of Items 1 and 2 of your letter and particularly those of the Item 3, referring to Mr. Hansen’s collection. I am more than inclined to buy his collection ; but should like to know in detail, how the payment is to be made and how many and whose pictures altogether I would get for the sum of Frs. 1,800,000, and about Frs. 4,000,000.
Mr. Naruse has sent me the catalogue as mentioned in your letter ; but of course, he has kindly written something about the sales of the collection.
I hoped that I could fulfill my long standing promise to present our “Kimono” to Madame and Misses Benedite this year ; but very sorry to have to advise you that my wife was taken ill some time ago and is not still convalescent, which upset my programme entirely. I do hope you would kindly see how I am placed during these days and to give me some more time, before I can fulfill the promise.
Regarding Mr. Takenuchi’s picture, I heard that there was misunderstanding somewhere in the beginning and that it was sent back to Japan once. I heard again recently that it was shipped to Paris. I shall write you on the subject, after ascertaining the whole matter of Mr. Takeuchi, when I see him. I know, however, he appreciates what the Muse [sic] Rodin people have done for him at any rate.
I am also anxious to hear about the progress on “Port of Hell.”
With my kindest regards to you and your family members for the meanwhile, and hoping to hear from you on the above points at your convenience,
I am, dear Sir,
Yours faithfully,
K. Matsukata
