Dennis Brutus, poet and South African expatriate, was an activist, working for an end to racial segregation in sport. The Dennis Brutus Papers comprise correspondence, papers associated with specific organizations and events, and numerous drafts of poems, both handwritten and typed.
The Dennis Brutus Papers were donated to the Northwestern University Archives by Professor Brutus in 1983 as Accession #83-157. Addition: These additions to the Brutus Papers have been received beginning with that of November, 1983 (Accession #83-158), September 17, 1984 (Accession #84-155), and concluding with that of October 8, 1984 (Accession #84-185). Addition: Joshua Lazerson July 9, 1985. Addition: This addition was received by the University Archives as Accession # 90-113 on August 3, 1990. One cubic foot of duplicate or extraneous materials was discarded. A few items, mostly relating to sports events in Africa, were separated and transferred to the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies at Northwestern University.
