Pendant son séjour à Tunis et Carthage en 1858, Flaubert rendit visite à Nathan Davis (1812-1882), chapelain anglican, qui s'était installé à Carthage avec sa famille pour y mener des fouilles ; il publia en 1861 Carthage and her remains, Londres, R. Benthley.
