Exhibition presentation

It contained many diverse authentic objects such as paintings, sculptures and other works from private and public collections. Documentary images and film excerpts could be viewed throughout the circuit, along with six short films directed by contemporary directors (Abbas Kiarostami, Isild Le Besco, Pablo Trapero, Yousry Nasrallah, Nobuhiro Suwa and Abderrahmane Sissako) commissioned especially for this occasion and screened in a small cinema within the exhibition.
The circuit was organised following five main approaches : Legend; History and Geography of Women’s Hair; Gestures; The Great Screenplays; Hair-as-matter. It “compares Western and Eastern cinema, past (Buñuel, Antonioni, Fuller, Bergman, etc.) and present (Hou Hsiao-hsien, Lynch, Godard, etc.)” (Cinémathèque française activity report, 2010).
The aim was to pay tribute to legendary actresses, to question the “feminine mystery” through their hair styles, thus showing the gestures they have influenced across the arts. The exhibition, which was organised chronologically, offered historical markers set into perspective by aesthetic associations.
Exhibition presented on the 5th floor of the Cinémathèque Française, over 600m². Sponsored by Neufliz OBC and Groupama and supported by Kodak, StudioCanal and the INA.
