Exhibition presentation

Exhibition dedicated to animation filmmaker Norman McLaren. This in situ exhibition featured authentic objects and substitutes. In a film- and art-historical perspective, it brought together McLaren’s graphic, pictorial and cinematic work. The authentic objects were made up of a wide range of archives, including drawings, graphs, sheet music, intricate calculations, production photographs, set plans, preparatory documents and original cut-outs. The substitutes included photograms. According to the catalogue, the circuit was divided into twenty sections. An anteroom focused both on McLaren’s beginnings in London, in 1934, and on his acclaim in Cannes in 1955, where his short film Blinkity Blank won the Palme d’Or. The next three sections focused on specific techniques invented and developed by McLaren. Fifteen islands highlighted various facets of McLaren’s art.
The exhibition can be described as a co-production with the Canadian Cinematheque.
