Epicurei : index épistémologique et transcriptions enrichies de textes épicuriens - epistemological index and enriched transcriptions of Epicurean texts

Editorial principles

The Epicurei website offers critical transcriptions always based on an ancient edition (for example, for the Letters of Epicurus and the Kuriai Doxai, the edition of Hermann Usener). These transcriptions are critical in the sense that they show for each problematic place of the Greek text (highlighted in yellow) the different versions adopted by several other reference editions. The selected version appears within the transcription, the divergent lessons appear in a bubble when the mouse is hovered over them. The terms underlined in blue are the indexed terms: they refer by a direct link to the corresponding entry in the general index.

It is not so much a question of selecting a text that would be the right one, but rather to visually highlight the very uneven nature of the Epicurean corpus, and the difficulty of establishing a common reference text. It seemed to us particularly important not to maintain the illusion, inherent to any indexation, of a fixed and totally objectivable and quantifiable text, but to underline on the contrary the irreducibly subjective part of such a work. We have also wished to give to read, gathered in the same place, other historical versions of the Epicurean texts, by reproducing extracts of ancient editions. We thus wish that the user of the Epicurei site has at his disposal the widest possible Epicurean material, and can become aware of the historical thickness of the transmission of Epicurean texts, and of the editorial history of these texts. The metadata are systematically completed by references to the CIRIS database, developed by the Jean Pépin laboratory, for more exhaustive descriptions of the texts and editions used in the Epicurei site.
