The Mythologia website will publish the text of Book I. Regarding the annotation of this Book, the reader should refer to the printed edition. This edition also includes an afterword, appendices and five studies on Conti's Mythologie.
Presentation of the book:
An exceptional mythographic work in terms of its scope and posterity, Natale Conti's Mythologia is an essential reference for European scholars, thinkers, educators and artists of the 16th and 17th centuries. People refer to it to prove the existence of a little-known version of a myth or to quote a fragment of an ancient text, to represent a deity with rarely seen attributes or to discover interpretations capable of stimulating thought. Today, as in the past, anyone who wants to understand a little-used expression or a surprising aspect in the treatment of a mythological subject will usually find the explanation he or she is looking for. The first of his ten Books, published here, introduces this rich material. It defines the usefulness of fables and their difference from the apologue, analyses their link with the divine, and describes the rites and sacrifices of ancient peoples. As a manual, a poetic anthology and a high place of knowledge, the Mythologia has undergone continuous metamorphoses due to its author, its editors, correctors, commentators, translators and illustrators. The present edition endeavours to give an account of these transformations, while shedding light on their context and meanings. To this end, it gives the last French version of the text, published in 1627 on the initiative of Jean Baudoin. Translator, commentator and editor, Jean Baudoin, who was one of the first members of the Académie française, knew, in his own words, how to embellish the work and give it its accomplished form. He thus contributed to the remarkable influence of this work, which was essential to the European culture of the early modern period.
