It highlights the diversity of texts likely to shed light on the practices of female spectators: plays, paratexts, theoretical treatises, polemical pamphlets, medical texts, narrative fiction, memoirs and correspondence, travel accounts, periodicals or even educational treatises and conduct books. The aim is to open up new avenues for the study of women's participation in culture by revealing the variety of materials and approaches, by comparing several European countries over a period of three centuries and by highlighting the role played by some specific women (patrons and dedicatees, but also actresses, authors and publishers) in the creation and reception of theatre.
