Mr Emile Zola,
Sir
I have been watching your trial with interest and today learn with regret the unfavorable outcome. Your genius I have long admired, and, no doubt for such as you. Your time of imprisonment can be spent in giving to the world, works that will be blessings to mankind. For all. I hope you will pardon my presumption in my asking you for the autograph of the greatest living author. Being an American I think my asking so great a favor will be overlooked.
I am Yours respectly
Miss Mary Brarton
